York Advanced Motorcyclists are a group of motorcyclists with a common interest in enjoying riding our bikes. Some of us like touring, some of us prefer scratching - but we all ride for the sheer pleasure we get from it. Most of us are social riders, but a few combine it with business. Each in his or her own way gets a thrill or a buzz from riding, particularly in doing it well. A motorcycle is a very personal mode of transport - it can thrill and excite, it can get the adrenaline flowing, but it can also frighten and kill.
At York Advanced Motorcyclists we aim to dramatically increase your survival chances, by showing you how to safely enjoy that buzz ... without reducing the excitement.

The group started in 1997 when a number of members decided to set up a specific Institute of Advanced Motorist (IAM) group for motorcyclists in York and the surrounding area. For a number of years there was a section for motorcyclists in the York Group of Advanced Motorists, but the core number of motorcyclists had grown and those involved felt that they needed to concentrate training etc. on those members, so set about forming a separate group. The Head Office of the IAM agreed to hold an inaugural meeting on 12th March at Bishopthorpe Social Club. With the help of motorcyclists in the York Group of Advanced Motorists and ex-committee members of that group, the number of full members of the IAM required to start a separate group was exceeded and the IAM agreed to the York Advanced Motorcyclist group being formed and affiliated to the IAM.
